NetApp-Endura's youngest rider Michael Schwarzmann underlines his good form

Team News | 30.08.2013

Today Jelle Wallays of the Belgian team Topsport Vlaanderen-Baloise thwarted the plans of the top sprinters with a surprising breakaway victory. Due to a signalling error in which the breakaway riders took a different exit than the rest of the field at a roundabout, the group gained an ad hoc three-minute lead. Jelle Wallays took advantage of this opportunity and attacked the breakaway riders to cross the finish line alone with a 28 second lead.

Andre Greipel (Lotto-Belisol) won the sprint from the peloton ahead of Alessandro Petacchi (Omega Pharma-QuickStep). Team NetApp-Endura’s Michael Schwarzmann confirmed his good form after the Hamburg Cyclassics with a 15th place finish. Scott Thwaites followed in 19th place.

“Today we had offensive plans. We wanted to be represented in the breakaway group since I had anticipated that riders would be able to hold onto a lead until the finish line, which ultimately proved to be the case. At the same time, I have to say that we were the youngest team in this race with only two riders on the team over 23 years old and that we didn’t stand a chance in the sprint against world-competition such as Greipel and Petacchi. We will continue to bank on Michael Schwarzmann, who already proved his good form in the Cyclassics,” Sport Director Christian Pömer said after the stage.

As expected, the pace was very fast in the first stage of the World Ports Classic. On the flat route covering 165 kilometres, a five-man breakaway group was able to pull far away from the peloton, even after multiple efforts by the teams surrounding sprinters such as Gerald Ciolek (MTN-Qhuebeka) and Alessandro Petacchi (Omega Pharma-QuickStep). Jelle Wallays attacked from the breakaway group on the last 23 kilometres and crossed the finish line alone for a solo win.

Tomorrow riders can look forward to a windy stage along the coast back to Antwerp, which will also be 34 kilometres longer than today.
