Team NetApp-Endura gives an aggressive performance at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad

Team News | 23.02.2013

At this year's Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Team NetApp-Endura emphasized its well-known aggressive riding style. Over the demanding 200 kilometers, which started and ended in Gent, the team launched several attacks and was ultimately represented by Zak Dempster in the breakaway group of the day. When the last lead group formed, Luca Paolini (Katusha) prevailed to win the sprint against Stijn Vandenbergh (Omega Pharma-Quickstep) and claim victory. Sven Vandousselaere (Topsport Vlaanderen) came in third. Team NetApp-Endura's best rider was Markus Eichler crossing the finish line in 41st place. Captain Paul Voss crashed roughly 50 kilometers before the finish line and had to drop out of the race early. He was not injured.

Both in Spain and in frigid Belgium, Team NetApp-Endura got down to business once the starting signal had been fired. Andreas Schillinger didn't waste any time and launched an attack right after the race had begun. But the peloton was alert and prevented him from breaking away. Soon afterwards, another group with four riders broke away, including Blaz Jarc of Team NetApp-Endura. The field warded off this attack as well. The third breakaway attempt finally succeeded. This time, Team NetApp-Endura's Australian Zak Dempster was able to pull away from the field with a group of seven riders. When two more riders joined, the group of nine managed to build up as much as a five-minute lead. Nevertheless, the field had the group under control and forced the pace just in time. The breakaway riders were caught up with fifty kilometers before the finish line. Riders continued to attack from the compact main group and several groups of favorites formed. In the end, two riders from a lead group broke away and decided the day's win between themselves.

"It was a good race for us. There were three lead groups and we were represented in all of them. Zak Dempster rode a very good race up front," Ralph Denk, Team Manager for Team NetApp-Endura, said after the race.

"It's a shame that Paul Voss crashed. He was our captain today and we wanted to ride for him. He was in a promising position at the time of the crash. Up until then, the race had gone just the way we wanted. Unfortunately, despite a good race, we will have to go home empty-handed," Denk continued.
